Sacramento Fun with Rebecca.....

In Fourth grade, the kids learn all about California History and how the railroads and the Gold Rush changed the way Americans came to California. Rebecca has the same teacher as Kyle did in fourth grade and they take a day long trip to our state capitol to see Old Town and other things they learn about. I know it is a very long day for the kids and when Michael and Tina said they weren't going to go with Rebecca I volunteered! It was nice for me to catch up with Kyle's old teacher and to spend the day with my niece! Here were are at Arnold's office! Yes the governator.......he just bought and had this art piece installed. I am putting Rebecca in the picture so you can see how HUGE it is. Look at his paws.......massive and impressive-glad we did not spend state funds on this but I would be much prouder of this then the pile of doo doo we have in Downtown San Jose!!
Our state legislature was out for Spring Break so no seeing them in action but then again every time I have ever been here they are always on break or doing nothing.....now that I pay taxes it would be nice to see them actually doing something. It was also the first time I had been to Sacramento and not seen a protest of some kind. Nice for the kids to be able to take a tour and see what was in the buoilding.

Entrance rotunda.....so pretty and painted in many different colors. Would love to have a house this big so you could have a HUGE Christmas tree!!! Of course I would need a staff to help me decorate and clean but still be pretty cool.

Outside.....it was sprinkling when we got here and we all had to go thru the metal detectors to get inside. Passed the scan with flying colors and enjoyed the visit with the kids.

We went to the Railroad Museum to see lots of trains and to see how transportation was changed. We happened upon a day that the tour was run by volunteers dressed in period costume who had the kids re-enact different parts. Rebecca got to help drive the golden spike into the final piece of the railroads that connected the west and the east.

Place settings in the dining car.....some beautiful pieces of china from the many railroad lines are preserved here.

These fake chefs freaked the kids out. As we entered the train, there were some fake people but also some of the volunteers were sitting around the train. Gave the kids something to scream about but I think it helped to make it that much more real.

Rebecca walking thru the dining and sleeping cars. She was bothered by the fake people and was happy that I was able to tell her what was coming up next. She went thru quickly but not as fast as Kyle and his friends did 3 years ago. This time the volunteers took up most of their visit so they were not able to run free around the museum. I think the kids missed out on seeing the different engines and such but it was super awesome to not have to spend time in the gift shop with the girls!!

This is one of the actual trains in the first room. So big and impressive. It is a great place to visit and see so many trains. Clark and I visited last year with Savannah for his birthday and he enjoyed his time walking thru and reading all about the trains. We visited the Old Town and the kids got a lesson in the Old School House. We also visited Sutter's Fort and they were having Pioneer reenactment too. Our group was a little strange so we made our way through the fort and waited for everyone else to be done. Personally, I think they can skip the fort and see something else more interesting....maybe the Leland Stanford house or the Crocker Art Museum!!!!

So happy to be on the bus and since it was a coach type bus much better 2 hour ride then the school bus. I caught up on my newspaper reading, watching Tales of Desparaux and read the second book of the Twilight series finally. I still have more to go but it has been a very looonnngg time that I was given 2 hours of free time on my own. The kids were much calmer then when Kyle went. The bus seemed less crowded and less noisy. Most of them ate the candy they bought in Old Town and played their Nintendo DS's....best investment ever from the parents. I guess now I will have to wait until Savannah goes to 4th grade to do this trip again although I think Clark or Papa might claim they want to go too.
